Youth Mentoring Stewardship Project 2005/2006

Through the Youth Mentoring Stewardship Project, 11 classes from the 3 Mennonite Educational Institute (MEI) Schools participated in education programs and stewardship activities created by the Streaming Eagles Ecology Club, with the assistance of NWPS. Three education programs were created to fit into the Grade 5, Grade 7 aand Biology 11 curriculum. Each program included an educational slideshow and a stewardship activity or game.

Results of the Project:

  • 300 students participated in one of 3 education programs (Salmon Lifecycle, Water Quality and Stream Ecology)
  • 200 individuals participated in stewardship activities (water quality testing, habitat assessment, invasive species removal and native species planting)
  • 6 teachers were involved in hands-on environmental education
  • 2 community naturalists groups involved in a youth lead project
  • Large area cleared of invasive blackberry and planted with 130 indigenous species plants
  • Improvement of Downes Creek as Salmon & Trout Habitat.

NWPS would like to offer our sincere thanks to the Abbotsford Community Fund and the VanCity Community Fund for providing funding for our Youth Mentoring Stewardship project during the 2005/2006 school year.
