Youth Estuary Stewardship Project 2006

The 2006 YES project provided 87 students with a fantastic learning experience. Classes from Steve's Elementary, Mt. Pleasant Elementary and English Bluff Elementary spent two days working on the Fraser River Estuary with a number of NWPS volunteers, Riverworks volunteers and community members. Many positive impacts were made on the estuary, while the children learned how to study and protect the estuary.

Using various scientific methods, students recorded water quality measurements,
counted birds and other wildlife and surveyed the vegetation on the tidal mudflats to determine percent cover of aquatic plants, grasses, sedges, rushes, woody debris and invasive species. Students and volunteers worked in the mud and the muck during a rainy day at Annacis Island. With our combined efforts, we were able to remove over 5500 kg of industrial woody debris and several bags of garbage from the beach at Purfleet Point.

NWPS would like to offer our sincere thanks to BC Hydro, Royal Bank Foundation, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and the VanCity Community Fund for providing funding for our Youth Estuary Stewardship (YES) project in 2006.

Thank you to all our Volunteers (Kim Tran, Betsy Waddington, Erin Toews, Ann Peters, Amanda Peters, Tony Fong, Michelle Nguyen, Takashi, Melissa Tupper, Annatress Tupper, Cameron Noble, Tlell Elviss, Rex Turango, Patrick Mcguiness, Ishwarya, Jan Seger, Rebbeca Solkoski, Amber Chong, Tasha Murray and Riverworks Volunteers).
