 Volunteer Activities and Events

Each month NWPS coordinates an event or activity that allows individuals to get out and make a difference. Our volunteer stewardship activities offer a unique opportunity to get outdoors, get your hands dirty and help out the environment. If you would like to receive monthly email updates about NWPS volunteer events, please email NWPS and request to be added to our volunteer email list.

Volunteer Positions

We have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities available which range from office administration to fundraising to wildlife research, to environmental education to stewardship activities. Please view our detailed list of volunteer positions or contact NWPS for more information.

Estuary Stewardship Project Volunteers

We need people who are interested in getting dirty! Each Spring we take a number of classes out into the Fraser River Estuary and do beach clean ups. We need able bodied people to help clear out industrial woody debris from the beaches. We are looking for people who feel comfortable working outdoors in all kinds of weather. We are also looking for volunteers who might have chain saws for use in cutting up large logs. We need you for 1 weekend day and, if interested, one week day to work with school aged children. This volunteer assignment normally falls in April or May of each year so we are looking for people who can commit at least 6 to 12 hours on a weekday or weekend day. For more information about the project please review our Stewardship page

Fundraising Campaign Volunteers

This is our life blood work and we constantly are looking for dedicated volunteers willing to support our fundraising efforts.

  • Our Green Ribbon Campaign requires Volunteers to sign up retailers willing to have our donation box in their stores, enlisting Corporate Sponsors for donations to support the costs associated with the campaign and drivers willing to drop off and pick up our donation boxes from the various retail locations around the Lower Mainland.

  • The time commitment varies depending on the function to be done. Drivers would end up committing anywhere from 6 to 20 hours depending on their assigned locations. The time would be required at the end of March and April. Volunteers signing up retailers would be required from January to end of March and can commit anywhere from 20 hours to whatever maximum they would like. Volunteers who are interested in signing up Corporate Donors can commit anywhere from 40 hours to whatever maximum they would like.

  • Our Calendar Campaign requires Volunteers willing to sell calendars to companies, organize non-profit sales for schools and sports organizations, deliver calendars to purchasers and coordinate, track and follow up with retailers who have calendars on consignment. The campaign normally begins in late August and wraps up in December. The time commitment varies depending on the function to be done. Sales to non-profit groups would begin in September and complete in early December. We would look for Volunteers to commit a minimum of 160 hours to assist with this coordination. Sales to companies would begin in late October and complete in early December. We would look for Volunteers to commit a minimum of 80 hours to assist with this function. For Drivers, we would need 20 hours commitment in the month of November/December. For consignment tracking we would need a commitment of approximately 60 hours in the months from July to December.

Great Canadian Shoreline Clean up Volunteers

Every year the world does a beach clean up in September and NWPS would like more volunteers to join us in our effects at one of the local shorelines. The duties include picking up litter from the beach and cataloguing what you find. It's great fun when you do it with Family and Friends, so call us and find out when the next one will be.

    Membership Drive Volunteers

Like all non-profits, NWPS is constantly reaching out to the public for support. We are in need of volunteers who can help us with our Membership Drive. This activity normally runs each December. We would need a dedicated number of volunteers who would be willing to develop some creative methods of attracting more Members to our society. We believe the commitment of time for this activity would be around 30 hours but this would depend on the number of volunteers we are able to sign up for this activity. What the job entails is creating and mailing out reminder notices to current members, creating a membership sign up campaign which would attract new members to our society and updating our membership database.

    Newsletter Article Writing Volunteers

We are always looking for news worthy articles for our News & Views and Critters Newsletters. The time commitment is dependent on the material you're willing to provide. Please contact the office if you are interested in helping us out.

    Office Administration Volunteers

As with every office, there is always a lot of paper work. If you are interested in helping us with our receipt filings, letter writing, mail outs, newsletter formatting, correspondence or accounting we would love to hear from you. Time commitment is dependent on what function you would like to perform. Our busy time of year is from January to April for receipt tracking and mailing. We become busy again in August/September for our Calendar Campaign mail-outs and School program faxing. Please give us a call if you are interested in help out around the office.

    Website and Technical Support Volunteers

We are always looking for help. If you have ideas on how to make our websites more attractive and inviting please drop us a line. If you're interested in providing your technical expertise in supporting our computer requirements we're happy to hear from you. Depending on what you're interested in doing for us the time commitment could be a couple of hours to hundreds of hours so please do drop us a line if you're interested in help us out.

    Wildlife In The School Volunteers

We need people who are interested in helping us provide environmental education programs to school aged children. What this volunteer position does is help with the set up and breakdown of presentations, hand out of props and materials, provide support to the Education and Communication Coordinator and answer any questions Children may have with regards to the presentation or in general. Your camera skills may also be utilized since we like to capture our programs on camera for posting on our websites and newsletters.

Volunteers who are interested in this position need to be available Mondays to Fridays between 9 to Noon or Noon to 3 pm. You would need to be willing to volunteer sufficient time to learn about our Society and programs. We estimate your time investment for this to be about 40 hours total. We do not expect Volunteers to provide the programs but to have enough knowledge about the wildlife and habitats we present to answer questions. We will also need the Volunteer to commit to a specific amount of time each week so that we can book presentations using your assistance. For more information about the programs we provide please review our Education Programs page.

    Wildlife Walks Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers who have knowledge of wildlife in the Lower Mainland and who would be interested in providing wildlife walks in various locations. Currently NWPS runs Owls, Bats, and Urban Wildlife walks in the Lower Mainland area. We are looking for individuals to come out and either assist us with our walks or be the guides on our walks. Our walks normally take place in between the months of May to October, weather dependent and are normally an hour long depending on the type of walk and the location. We believe the commitment of time would be approximately 6 hours total to do one walk (time spent learning about NWPS, what our walks normally comprise and time committed to the walk itself).
